Practical Insights from the Webinar with Dr. Jason Han

Dr. HanDr. Jason Han, PT, DPT, recently led a CuraMedix educational webinar exploring how Shockwave and EMTT can be successfully integrated into everyday musculoskeletal care within a cash-based practice.

Dr. Han is the CEO of HealthFit Physical Therapy & Chiropractic in Pasadena, California, a former U.S. National Team taekwondo athlete, and a sports clinical specialist with 18 years in practice. His experience includes more than a decade in professional sports, including six years leading rehabilitation for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC).

How Shockwave Inspired a New Perspective on Rehabilitation and Healing

Dr Han’s own background in pro sports informs his approach to rehabilitative care. As a taekwondo athlete who won multiple medals in international competition, he was a patient before he was a medical professional. An injury played a role in ending Dr. Han’s taekwondo career, and he became determined to use this incident as inspiration to provide the best care possible to athletes.

Across time working with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cirque du Soleil, and LAFC (Los Angeles Football Club), Dr. Han built a rehabilitative medicine career that allowed him to pursue this passion while supporting some of the top athletes in the world, and ultimately through his own practice.

During this journey, Dr. Han had encountered Radial Pressure Wave before. But it wasn’t paired with the right training, application remained basic, and Dr. Han noted that “we didn’t know what we didn’t know.” The results? “Less than stellar.”

As his career progressed, however, Dr. Han started hearing great things about Shockwave from fellow medical professionals. Thinking Differently About Healing

Dr. Han worked in a movement-based tradition of physical therapy that focused on avoiding movement dysfunctions that exacerbate injuries through the right biomechanics. His experiences with Shockwave and EMTT broadened his perspective to include encouraging healing for these underlying injuries.

This insight became the basis of his “Source-Cause-Stack.” methodology.

Heal the Source, Treat the Cause

Dr. Han’s Source-Cause-Stack framework gives clinicians a clear way to integrate Shockwave and EMTT into the care they already provide:

  • Source: The damaged tissue or underlying pathology, such as an injured tendon, scar, or fracture site.
  • Cause: The posture, movement patterns, daily activities, and other biomechanical factors that may contribute to the problem.
  • Stack: The combination of hands-on treatment, exercise, and regenerative technologies used to address both.

This framework also helps patients understand how each element of their care fits into a larger plan. Dr. Han emphasized that patients want to be led with clarity. When clinicians can explain what they are treating, why they are treating it, and how each part of the plan works together, patients are better equipped to trust the process.

One case study involved a patient with a history of ankle sprains who sustained another acute ankle injury six days before a half marathon. Dr. Han’s team addressed both the injured tissue and contributing limitations across the kinetic chain, combining regenerative technologies with manual care and exercise. Although biology never allows clinicians to guarantee an outcome, the integrated approach gave her an opportunity to complete the race, which she successfully did.

How to Make Shockwave and EMTT Yours

  1. Use it. Apply the technology with appropriate patients and across relevant diagnoses to build experience, understand how patients respond, and develop clinical confidence.
  2. Integrate it. Incorporate Shockwave and EMTT into the way you already assess and treat. Dr. Han emphasized trusting your clinical judgment and learning to use each device as an extension of your hands rather than allowing the technology to dictate your approach.
  3. Build it in. Create a treatment and operational model that makes sense for your practice. How the technology fits into appointments, workflows, and care plans will look different for a solo medical practice than for a multidisciplinary clinic.
  4. Scale it. Develop a team that understands both the technology and the clinical reasoning behind its use. Ongoing education, shared frameworks, and internal clinical leadership can help multiple providers deliver care consistently.

Patient communication should be adapted in much the same way. Some patients want to understand the science, while others primarily want to know whether the treatment can help them. Some respond to a clinician’s experience and credentials, while others need to feel that their concerns have been heard. Knowing the patient in front of you allows you to explain the treatment in a way that creates clarity and confidence without overwhelming them.

As Dr. Han emphasized, the goal is not to sell a machine, but to help patients recognize that they have found a practitioner who understands their problem and has a thoughtful plan for addressing it.
